COURSE DESCRIPTION:
For pastors, Sunday morning preaching is the pinnacle of each week’s ministry. Nothing is more visible. It’s how the congregation gets to know the pastor; and more importantly, it’s a fleeting opportunity to change lives.
The course material combines the best of classic and foundational preaching techniques with common sense and timely tips… without unnecessary drudgery.
The textbook’s genius is in its compiling and condensing of best-practice preaching methods and focuses in an easy to comprehend manner. This is a great course for grounding or re-grounding yourself as a preacher.
Students compose and submit a homily (short sermon) for instructor and student evaluation.

Mary S Hulst
Dr. Mary S. Hulst has served as Calvin College Chaplain since 2009 and preaches weekly to its students. Prior to that, she spent eight years serving as the senior pastor at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, and also taught for one year in the Communication Department at Calvin College and two years at Calvin Theological Seminary. Education- BC of classical studies, Calvin College; MDiv, Calvin Theological Seminary; PhD, University of Illinois. Her book, A Little Handbook for Preachers, summarizes the teachings of classic and great preaching instructors in a concise form‒ providing foundational concepts, tips and important reminders for newcomers and seasoned preachers alike.
